MOOD BOARD
SARAH LEAL
Sarah Leal is an Brazilian artist who worked on a series of photographs of hands and face. She mainly focuses in photography and fashion and her glow in the dark series was inspired by neon artist Hid Saib. In some of her work she uses two models and gets close ups of their neon painted faces, which shows a connection between the two models, capturing the beauty and the difference of each one , she highlights the lips and eyelashes to show off their main features. I like how she uses two people in her shoot because it shows emotional bonds and adds more to the picture. She also incorporates hands into her pictures which shows off different ways of using the paint and gives an artistic look to the photographs, she also uses hands to link to the connections and emotional bond people share.

This image stands out to me in particular as she uses multiple hands which creates an interest and appealing dynamic, this is something I would like to recreate in my own work. I also like how she uses contrasting colours of neon paint on her models hands, for example in the image on the left, she displays a range of colours from orange to green, mixing them all together to create a rainbow appearance which draws the eyes to the picture, this adds depth to her work. The way the arms are wrapped around the other models hands initiates a complex and mystifying outcome, which is original and lively.
NADINE SCHÖNFELD
|
Nadine Schönfeld is a German photographer from Berlin. She became a photographer in 2009 and focuses mainly on taking pictures of people in the fields of fashion, beauty and portrait. Schönfeld has a blog that she uses to update her latest collections of photgraphs. Her glow in the dark photography really stood out and inspired me, she not only had still photohraphs but captured the colour of the neon paint through movement as well, making the the photos much more interesting and fun. I really like the way she made the neon paint really stand out and highlight the features of a human face, for example the eyes mouth, she even includes the eyebrows and nails in some of her work. Schönfeld not only uses a black background in majority of her pictures but also uses different coloured backgrounds e.g. pink and blue, which makes the models appearance much more visable and giving the picture more beauty. I especially like how she captured the colour when the person moves because it gives the photograph more life and excitement.

Photo shoot one & two - HANDS
I decided to experiment in the style of the photographer 'Sarah Leal', using hands. I used my fingers and a thin brush to apply the paint onto the hands. The green paint represented the veins in her hands and the patches of orange and red to add contrasting warm colours which creates a bold, messy look, showing off the structure of her hands. The bright glow in the dark colours stand out against the black background and gives a fun and out of the ordinary look, which is unique and an interesting style. I also got my model to move her hands in different positions and shot at different angles to get a different perspective and to be more creative with my ideas so that I could get an extraordinary, quirky outcome. The colours came out brightly and glowed in a way that draws your attention to all the details of the hand.
My top photograph
I chose this picture as one of my best photos as the quality and focus of the picture shows depth in the models hands. The way the UV light is positioned to shine directly onto her fingers really heightens the texture of her fingers and shows the contrast of the glow in the dark paint in the UV light to the rest of the background as the lower hand and forearm disappear into the darkness, creating more depth in the photo and preventing it from looking flat and making it look more 3D. The way I had the model position her hands also gives the photo a quirky look as it makes the viewer think into what is going on in the picture as the shadows create a mysterious look as the hands and fingers are merged into what looks like just one hand with many fingers. Another thing about this photo is the way the green paint contrasts against the pink and orange and the black light, resembling blood running through veins.
